| 1.JULY WAS EXCELLENT!
Our meetings just seem to be getting better and better! In July we started out with a continuation of an idea that we'd initiated earlier. A couple of months ago we read stories written by members of our club. In July we shared published stories from established authors. Tales were shared by Sue Feder, Dave Henderson and yours truly. Our movie theme was "Forgotten Horrors." John Clayton treated us to the 1965 supernatural thriller, DARK INTRUDER (and of course it was preceded by another chapter of "The Crimson Ghost" serial, thanks to Barry Murphy). We topped the evening off with a lively meeting where we discussed "The ICS Files," television, books, movies and all manner of things (some of which will be discussed below). It was a fine evening for all involved! 2.NEWS OF OUR NEXT MEETING

It's impossible, in the space that we have, to list and describe all of the guests and participants. This is after all a World Con! I reviewed what was noted as a partial list of names and their accomplishments. Their were over 260 people listed! Among them are some of the best and brightest in the field of science fiction. Like many conventions this will have a strong literary bent, but not to the exclusion of film. There will also be scientists on panels discussing science-based approaches to favorite sci-fi topics like space exploration. At this writing the schedule is still being ironed out but a few of the highlights include the opening ceremony, continuous film showings, auctions, presentation of the Hugo awards and the RetroHugos, a dance, a masquerade and something called the "Million Wizard March" (!?). The cost to attend, at this point, is $170 (that price will go up before the convention). To attend, or for more information either write to The Millennium Philcon/ P.O. Box 310/ Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006-0310 or email: phil2001@netaxs.com. Capclave's Guest of Honor is Gardner Dozois, the editor of "Asimov's Science Fiction" and The Year's Best Science Fiction as well as the winner of several Hugo awards. Their "Ghost" of Honor is Joseph Mayhew, Hugo-winning cartoonist, author, librarian, and fan. He passed away last year. Capclave will have a tribute to him and provide a chance for people to share the many things they've learned from him. Other participants include authors Roger MacBride Allen, Brenda Clough, Alexis Gilliland, Peter Heck, Jane Jewell, Mindy Klasky, Nancy Kress, Charles Sheffield, Michael Swanwick, Lawrence Watt-Evans and editor Gardner Dozois. | 28.KAZAKHSTAN TACKLES THE TOLKIENISTS
I ASSUME that although "The ICS Files" is available on the World Wide Web, most of its readers are in the U. S. of A. In this country we take it for granted that we can toddle down to the nearest google-plex, see the latest over-budgeted effects-heavy meltdown on the screen, pop off and get a novel and magazine about the flick and then groan about it to our friends. Sometimes we need stories like this next one to remind us that this is a privilege not shared by significant populations across the globe. In the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, in the capital city of Almaty, police are cracking down on fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books, seeing them as practitioners of an illegal "bohemian" lifestyle. The Rings books are popular in the countries of the former Soviet Union, where thousands of fans dress up and gather in conventions. Police have detained so-called "Tolkienists," some of whom complain that they have been tortured. One fan said that he was held for two days in a "water tank," a narrow cell about 4 1/2 feet high that is half-filled with cold water in which a prisoner is forced to crouch. Kazakhstan police consider the fans to be Satanists and who conduct dark rituals. 29.AN INTERVIEW WITH HARLAN ELLISON

Alec Baldwin has dropped his lawsuit against The Devil and Daniel Webster producer David Glasser and has returned to finish the movie, his directoral debut. Baldwin also stars in the film with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Anthony Hopkins; the movie is an adaptation of Stephen Vincent Benet's supernatural story of the same name, about a writer who sells his soul to satan. Baldwin and Glasser have settled their differences, which concerned financing. Baldwin is now editing the film. 34.VELCOME TO DRACULA LAND

51.IMAGINATIVE CINEMA FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST
AUGUST 10: OSMOSIS JONES is set INSIDE Bill Murray. Fortunately we only see live action of his exterior. When we go inside its animated. It's from the brothers Farrely (Bobby and Peter) who previously did KINGPIN and THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. Frank Detomello (Murray), is a construction worker who catches a cold. The inside of his body is known as the "City of Frank" to its inhabitants. Two of them team up to fight the invading viruses intent on taking over the City. We have a free-wheeling white blood cell cop Osmosis Jones (voiced by Chris Rock) and a by-the-book cold tablet named Drixorial (David Hyde Pierce). You'll also hear Laurence Fishburne as the evil invader and William Shatner as Mayor Phlegmming. THE OTHERS is about a woman named Grace (Nicole Kidman) who retires with her two children to a mansion on an island near the English Coast, towards the end of the Second World War, where she's waiting for her husband to come back from battle. The children have a disease which means they cannot be touched by direct sunlight without being hurt in some way. They will live alone there with oppressive, strange and almost religious rules (for example "don't open a door until you've closed the previous"), until she needs to hire a group of servants for them. Their arrival will accidentally begin to break the rules with unexpected consequences. There's something strange about the house that she will soon discover. The movie was written and directed by Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar in what will be his English language debut. AUGUST 22: JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK features the duo of losers from CLERKS, MALLRATS and DOGMA. Our titular characters are out to stop Miramax from making a movie about them. Expect lots of in jokes and STAR WARS gags. AUGUST 24: JOHN CARPENTER'S GHOSTS OF MARS takes place some 175 years in the future in a dusty frontier mining town on Mars. A small squad of police have been sent to transfer an extremely dangerous criminal, Desolation Williams (Ice Cube), back to the main administrative Martian city, Chryse. Our heroine, Melanie (Natasha Henstridge), is second in command of this squad. What no one realizes is that mining operations have uncovered, and disturbed, the ruins of an ancient Martian civilization and unleashed a kind of spiritual doomsday defense system that will relentlessly destroy any alien presence (in this case, Earthlings) inhabiting Mars. When the cops arrive at this remote outpost, no one but the criminals locked away in the local jail have survived... And the "Martian Ghosts" are determined not to let them get away. The cast also has Pam Grier and Joanna Cassidy. Unlike some recent films with names attached to them that didn't do much with the film, this movie was written, directed and executive produced by John Carpenter. AUGUST 31: JEEPERS CREEPERS is a teen/horror flick about a nice trip gone bad. After making a horrific discovery in the basement of an old abandoned church, Trish (Gina Philips) and her brother Darry (Justin Long) watch their routine road trip home from college turn into a heart stopping race for their lives. They find themselves the chosen prey of an indestructible force that relentlessly pursues them and gives a new and chilling meaning to the old song "Jeepers Creepers." The movie was directed by Victor Salva. |
| 52.THE WB EXITS THE BRONZE AGE
The WB announced that it has shut down "The Bronze," the four-year-old posting and message board for fans of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, due to its move from The WB to UPN. The posting board has been the international nexus for BUFFY fans, who have used it as a springboard for get-togethers and three annual charity fund-raising parties in Los Angeles. BUFFY executive producer Marti Noxon, one of several writers and producers who dropped by the posting board in the last day, assured fans that a new Bronze would be up and running when BUFFY makes its debut on UPN. "This is a sad day, but rest assured, another Bronze-like BUFFY board will be up soon," Noxon wrote. "We've been talking to UPN, and they are on it, believe me. They want you guys to continue to have a home to express your BUFFY-related . . . feelings/etc. . . . Thanks for all your incredible passion and enthusiasm for the show. Many, many times - I've felt disconnected or discouraged, and I've come for a little lurk on the board to remind myself that there is actually an AUDIENCE out there - a living, feeling world of people responding to what we do, day in and day out. You guys are the reason we're still on the air, and you guys make us feel proud and honored to do what we do. Seriously - thank you." 53.SPIDER-MAN ON THE WEB
