2.OUR SHERLOCKIAN SEPTEMBER WAS SENSATIONAL 
    Dave Henderson's Sherlock Holmes presentation and movie were a hit. We learned about the various incarnations of Holmes on the screen. The movie that we watched, A STUDY IN TERROR, won with our single largest vote-count (20). We followed up with a very enthusiastic business meeting. It was a hit! 

3.OCTOBER I: THE BASICS 
    Our October meeting/Halloween ho-down will be held on Saturday October 27 at 6:00 P.M. at the church hall behind the Perry Hall Presbyterian Church located at 8848 BelAir Road. Take Baltimore Beltway exit 32 north on BelAir Road. Turn left onto Joppa Road. Immediately past the miniature golf course turn left into the parking lot. 4.OCTOBER II: THE MOVIES 
    John Ward is bringing us a healthy dose of Hitchcock. That familiar black silhouette will be visiting us for October to bring us tales of madness and murder. Many thanks here go to Rick Rieve, who will not be able to join us for October, but has left us a dozen high quality Hitchcock DVD's from which to select. Attaboy Rick!

6.OCTOBER IV: THE ALL-NIGHTER 
    You've heard of party till you puke? Well in October we'll be meeting till you uh, you uh - I guess till you get tired and go home. In October we'll be holding our first ever all-night ICS spectacular. For people whose ability to stay awake far exceeds mine, we'll be screening movies and kicking back until dawn, or until common sense tells the last person to go home. Joe Plempel, THE child of the night, has committed to go the distance. 

7.OCTOBER V: FAVORITE LINES 
    One of the things that makes your favorite movie your favorite movie is because it's got your favorite lines in it. How many times have you been describing the movie to friends, only to hear yourself saying, ". . . so just then he looks up and says . . . " or ". . . so she does a double take, straightens her shoulders, and shoots back . . . ." Well now you have a chance to re-live those magical moments in October at the ICS meeting. Thanks to a suggestion form Barry Walker we're asking folks to write up their five favorite movie lines and share them in October. If you have access to a computer you can turn to the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) for help. You might want to practice saying them in character. We'll try to guess who said them. It sounds like fun! 

8.OCTOBER VI: COSTUMES 
    This is our annual Halloween bash. As usual, we're making this costume-optional. Be creative! Be original! Be daring! We just ask that you use common sense and good taste. We'll be eating dinner. No one wants to eat with other people's stretch marks and cellulite in their face. 

9.THE ICS DOES THE FANEX FALL SPOOKTACULAR 
    Clear your calendars! You've got something to do on November 3. On the Saturday after our next meeting we'll be going to the FANEX FALL SPOOKTACULAR! Details for the show are below, in the "THINGS TO COME" section. 
    We've worked out a deal with the show's sponsors, Gary and Sue Svehla. In exchange for using our video projector for the day we'll get two free tables there and free entrance for ICS members. Any club member who is wearing an ICS badge will get to get in for free! 
    We need three things from our members: 
    1) STUFF TO SELL. We know that you've been asked before, but, if there still some things lying around unloved then bring them with you to our next meeting. We'll turn them into cash for the club. 
    2) PEOPLE TO WORK. We'll need volunteers to staff the table. The hours of the show are 10-8. We'd like two-hour commitments but, honestly, whatever you can spare will help. 
    3) HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME. This is a nice opportunity for club members. Use it! Go to the show. Spend lots of money. Hob-nob with other fans. Enjoy yourself! You deserve it. 

10.GET WELL WISHES 
    We have some hurting and recovering family members out there. Here's wishing them all a speedy healing. 
    Charlie Wittig had rotator cuff surgery. Those of you at the last meeting saw him with his arm in a sling. He's got his doctors stunned with his rapid recovery. He has some physical therapy to deal with and a few other health issues hanging out there but he seems to be on the right track. 
    Gary Roberson's father is working with cancer at the moment. We're hoping that he fights his way back and perhaps we'll get to meet him at a meeting one day. Hanging in there, Mr. R. 
    If Mitch Klein starts looking better rested it might be because his significant other, Kelly Linenberger, got her deviated septum operated on. It might sound like a minor thing but anyone who has had to put up with repeated nasal problems and snoring knows that a deviated septum can drive you and your honey nuts. Kelly will be the same deviant she always was, but that septum will be straight as an arrow! 

11.WE BOUGHT A BULB! 
    We mentioned in our last issue that the ICS now has its very own DVD player. Well now we have our own replacement bulb for the video projector! The bulb cost several hundred dollars. We hope that will significantly extend the life of our projector. We'd like to not have to think about replacing that anytime soon. 

12.CALENDAR STATUS 
    We'd hoped to have a new calendar to you by our October meeting. Unfortunately that's not going to happen. The downtime from the virus-shutdown that I experienced prevents that. We hope to have one to you by our November meeting, on November 17. 

13.LOTR EN MASSE 
    There was a sentiment expressed at our last meeting that, when FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING debuts in December that we check it out as a club activity. Keep your December open for a LORD OF THE RINGS (LOTR, to the uninitiated) field trip. It's due in theaters Wednesday, December 19.

15.BABYLON 5: LEGEND OF THE RANGERS HAS A NEW AND IMPROVED SITE 
    Scifi.Com has launched a redesigned official Web site for The Sci-Fi Channel's upcoming original television movie BABYLON 5: LEGEND OF THE RANGERS. RANGERS is a new two-hour film from the creative team behind BABYLON 5 and tells the story of the Ranger fleet as it attempts to restore order to hundreds of civilizations devastated by the Shadow War. 
    The site includes Web-only trailers for the movie, an interview with B5 and RANGERS star Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar) and a sweepstakes to win a one-of-a-kind RANGERS poster signed by the cast members, B5 creator J. Michael Straczynski and executive producer Doug Netter. 

16.DAWN THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? 
     Michelle Trachtenberg, who plays little sister Dawn on UPN's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, said that creator Joss Whedon has approached her about starring in another BUFFY spinoff series. "I've been asked if a spinoff or a continuation [of the show] would be of interest to me, and pretty much it is," she said. "It's quite exciting. I love my character, and I love the fact that Joss lets me exercise any type of acting that I want to and really show what I can do." 
     Whedon, who is also developing an animated BUFFY series and a British spinoff featuring the Giles character, is eyeing Trachtenberg in case BUFFY star Sarah Michelle Gellar ever moves on. BUFFY has already spun off the successful WB series ANGEL. 
     In the meantime, Trachtenberg said her character will finally get to deal with boys this season. "There were some hints about that in the 'Body' episode," Trachtenberg said. "But all I can say is that, like any teen-ager, Dawn will be going through every type of emotion. Anything you throw at me, I'll try to tackle." 

17.ENTERPRISE HELPS TO RENEW THE TREK FRANCHISE 
     UPN has gleefully announced final ratings for the two-hour season premiere of ENTERPRISE, which resulted in the network's highest-rated night of programming since the 1995 premiere of STAR TREK: VOYAGER. The Sept. 26 debut drew 12.5 million viewers, according to the network. 
     ENTERPRISE also made the evening UPN's highest-rated Wednesday night ever, the network reported. It set new records with the highest Wednesday metered market ratings for 39 UPN affiliates across the country, including those in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington. 
     This was a desperately needed victory for TREK. According to Mark A. Altman, co-author of several books about the TREK phenomenon, "Clearly, the STAR TREK franchise has been ailing for some time now. There's no question that interest in the show has waned. Certainly, the challenge for the new show is to re-spark the fervor for STAR TREK that characterized its following in the early '80s through the mid-'90s." 
     STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION regularly drew more than twice as many viewers as the typical episode of VOYAGER. The last TREK feature film, 1998's INSURRECTION, grossed just $70.2 million domestically, much less than 
each of the two previous TREK films. 
     It's one reason TREK caretakers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga decided to go in a new direction for ENTERPRISE. "My feelings were very strong that we had played out the 24th century," series co-creator Berman explained. "We'd done over 500 episodes [in that era] on NEXT GENERATION and DEEP SPACE NINE and VOYAGER, and it just seemed that if we were going to embark on a new series, it would have to be dramatically different." 

18.SOME TREK FANS HATE THE ENTERPRISE THEME 
    Fans seem to like ENTERPRISE but a lot of them say they don't much like its soft-rock theme song, a first for a TREK series. More than 1,000 Trekkers have signed at least two online petitions to remove the song; "Faith of the Heart" by Dianne Warren, sung by opera star Russell Watson; and replace it with a more traditional orchestral score. A version of the song, by Rod Stewart, was featured in the movie Patch Adams. 
    "The fans have voiced their opinions across the Internet, and they share the sentiment that the intro to ENTERPRISE is woefully inappropriate for a STAR TREK series, and, as such, should be changed as quickly as possible," one petition reads. "Since the airing of the original series, STAR TREK has opened with a piece of music scored by a prominent composer and has been without vocals. We fans see no reason for this to change and ask that you uphold the tradition Gene Roddenberry began thirty-five long years ago." The petitions are addressed to ENTERPRISE executive producers and co-creators 
Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. 
    Braga responded, "We can't please everybody." He said that plenty of people find the song very uplifting." His advice to fans who don't like the theme? "Turn the volume down." 

19.FARSCAPE SEASON WILL HAVE A BIG ENDING 
     Ben Browder, who plays Cmdr. John Crichton in FARSCAPE, said that the third season's final episodes will be "really big." "I actually think that perhaps the best episode of the season is in the final four," Browder said in an interview at the recent FARSCAPE convention in Burbank, Calif. "It's huge in scale, from a practical standpoint of shooting it, and effects, and 
emotionally. It's big. It's really big." 
     Browder added that he couldn't reveal the secrets of the upcoming episodes, but added, "There's a super-secret scene, which only three people know about. . . . There's actually three storylines [from the season], which all come together in the end." 
     Executive David Kemper was equally circumspect, saying only, "Everything that [fans] expect is wrong, and I'll be disappointed if people aren't upset, exhilarated, angry and completely befuddled. We have to get them to expect one thing, and then give them something else. So everything they think is going to happen doesn't, but yet it will happen. . . . Lots of 
things will happen, but they'll happen so differently, that they'll feel different. . . . Let's just say, themes that have been developed in the year will come together and pay off by the end of the year. All the clues are there." 
     A key question will be how the surviving John Crichton deals with Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black), who developed a romantic relationship with Crichton's doomed doppelganger during the season. "I think you'll see a lot of that in the last four" episodes, Kemper. "They have to talk to each other. They have to deal with it. They have to find out what their relationship is, and what 
it's going to be." 
     The final episodes of season three, which have already been shot, will air in January. As for season four? Browder said he will be writing at least one episode. And, Kemper added, "There's a story here that's unfolding for us, almost against everyone's will. It's happening on its own. That story will continue. The end of this season is simply, in terms of storytelling, artificially imposed upon us by the network. The next story is the next story, no matter what happens." 

20.JERI RYAN - FROM 7 OF 9 TO 9/11 
    The official fan club of STAR TREK: VOYAGER star Jeri Ryan is sponsoring an online auction to benefit the American Red Cross and its relief efforts for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The auction, co-sponsored by Ryan's official Web site, takes place Nov. 3-9 and will feature collectibles and items donated by Ryan and her show biz pals. 
    So who knows? We just might see STAR TREK fan Mike Schilling strolling into a meeting in Ms. Ryan's 7 of 9 cat suit and killer pumps. I guess we'll know how that auction went! 

21.ABC AND FOX DUEL OVER TIME TUNNEL 
    ABC and Fox are battling over a remake of the 1966 television series, TIME TUNNEL, now in development by Regency Television and 20th Century Fox Television. Writer Rand Ravich (THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE) and director Todd Holland are updating the Irwin Allen series, about two young scientists who travel through time as part of a secret government project. Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni are attached as executive producers, along with Sheila Allen, Irwin Allen's widow. 
    Both ABC and Fox have made substantial offers for the rights to the project, with ABC's initial offer said to be significantly higher than Fox's. Each network has offered a pilot commitment with a cash penalty if the project is not taken to series. ABC has also made a 13-episode commitment to TIME TUNNEL, along with a higher cash penalty. Fox is willing to match ABC's bid. 

22.LUCY LAWLESS BLABS ABOUT THE X-FILES 
    As we'd reported earlier Lucy Lawless (A.K.A. XENA) will appear in this season's X-FILES in a recurring role. She recently broke the show's strict gag orders to talk about her character. We'll see her in the two-part ninth-season opener, "Nothing Important Happened Today," which will air on November 4. 
    She said, "My character, Shannon McMahon, re-enters [Agent John] Doggett's life. They used to be in the military together - in my backstory, they fought in Beirut - and now she's causing a great deal of trouble. You don't know if she's good, and you don't know if she's bad. She seems to be both things at once." 
    She said she'll be paying her respects for Scully's baby. "And I spent half my time naked," she said. "Why not, if it looks good onscreen? Of course, you don't see anything, except my well-endowed body double. Let's just say the character's a bit of a water baby, a water babe. She's a nymph." 
    She wanted to say more but feared the wrath of Chris Carter. "I feel like [he'll] come after me, and I'll end up with bloody cement boots on my feet at the bottom of the ocean if I tell you too much."

They describe themselves as, "A multi-media convention, focusing on fanzines and in-depth discussion of your favorite TV shows & movies." They have all of the bells and whistles of a usual convention - a dealer's room, discussions, gaming room, tons of panels, movie and TV shows playing, pretty much all the fixings with one notable exception. 28.SPIDEY WILL ADDRESS THE SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACK 
     J. Michael Straczynski, who is currently writing a story for Marvel Comics' "Amazing Spider-Man" series, will address the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in future issues. "Ever since the events surrounding the WTC, I have said little because, as noted in response to another note, I simply didn't have the words and didn't know where to look for them," Straczynski said. "And consequently declined invitations to make a statement, on the further grounds that I'm not qualified. . . . I got an e-mail from Marvel, who felt that in at least one of their books they needed to really address the issue of what happened at the WTC. Their feeling was that the one character best suited to this was Spider-Man because, after all, he's a native New Yorker. So they asked me to write it. Unsure if I had the wherewithal necessary to pull it off without embarrassing myself or trivializing the situation through any inadequacies on my part, I asked for 24 hours to think it over. Figured I'd probably pass, since I just didn't know how I could handle it in a comic book format. Somewhere along the way that night, I found the words, and 24 hours after my mail, I sent in the script. I think it says what needs to be said." He did not specify in which issue this story will see print.

32.WAS A.I. TOO INTELLIGENT FOR THE U.S.?
     Brian Aldiss, on whose short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long!," A.I. was based, has pondered why the movie didn't do better in the States. The 76-year-old author speculated that perhaps the film was too highbrow for U.S. audiences. "Perhaps audiences tired of David's winsomeness," Aldiss speculated. "Perhaps, my money is on this one, it is just too intelligent 
for adolescents, to judge by the initial runaway box-office success of the moronic new PLANET OF THE APES." 
     A.I. grossed $29 million on its opening weekend in North America, compared with PLANET OF THE APES' $68.5 million. "Of course there is no love affair, no archetypal boy meeting archetypal girl," Aldiss added. "The very missing item that excludes science fiction from wider popularity." 

33.SIGOURNEY WEAVER IS TEASING US ABOUT ALIEN 5 AGAIN 
     It's been noted previously on these pages that Sigourney Weaver has adopted a hobby of speculating, and then later denying, the possibility of shooting another ALIEN movie. Hang on to your beanies kids - she's at it again. A story has been written that Sigourney Weaver is in talks to make a fifth ALIEN movie. She says she'd be happy to reprise her role for a fifth time, and is currently in talks to see if it can happen. Weaver admits, "Yes, I've been talking to a few people - no names - about it, but I left my character not knowing even what species she was, so right now I'm a little unclear as to how things can progress." And Weaver says it was actually the untrue rumors that a fifth movie was in the works that made her give any 
thought to making the film. She says, "It was only when the rumors about Part 5 started that we realized what an appetite there was for it." 
    Okay, there's only one way to handle this. Make the movie and get Ripley eaten by one of the Aliens. Then make sure that our nasty little diner gets completely destroyed so that there's no way to clone another Ripley from its poop. Barring time-travel that's the only way to end further speculation about continuing what's been a declining franchise. 

34.E.T. GETS A MINOR MAKEOVER IN LIGHT OF THE TERRORIST ATTACKS 
    E.T. will undergo a slight alteration in light of the recent terrorist attacks when it is re-released next year to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Dee Wallace Stone has said that she had been called in to change a line in the film. "There was some reference to one of the Halloween characters in the film looking like a terrorist, so we're going in to re-loop that line," Stone said. She added that the re-release will feature "new footage, from what I understand." 

35.STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE GEEKS! 
    "Jedi Knight" has made it onto the list of official religions on the 2001 United Kingdom census. The listing is a result of an Internet campaign to get STAR WARS fans to list the fictitious order on their census forms. This may seem like a minor victory in a country that lists such religions as "Druid," "Satanist" and "Heathen." Nevertheless, the new order of self-proclaimed "Jedi" feel vindicated to receive billing with the Church of England, Roman Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu. 
    Officials from the Office of National Statistics were quick to point out that giving "Jedi Knight" its own code does not confer on it the status of official recognition. "We are not defining what a religion or a faith might be," a spokeswoman said. "We are recognizing what some may have entered on their census form and ensuring that our coding framework will cater for it." 
    So the big question remaining is tax code. Will action figures now be deductible as religion icons? Can trips to Tatooine be written off? And just how exactly will tax auditors catch Jedi hanky panky? Won't they be prone to Jedi mind-control tricks? Hmmmm. 

36.EPISODE II GAG REEL IN THE WORKS 
     Allison Gibbons, apprentice editor on George Lucas' upcoming STAR WARS: EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES, has said that she's assembling a gag reel of outtakes from the prequel. "There's been some pretty funny things," she said. "There's a few things we can't put in, because of swear words and things. Or when the lady farted on set - we were cracking up for hours here. Or when [co-star] Ewan [McGregor] couldn't get a line out, but he kept trying and trying and stuffing it up each time. It's funny to watch. It gives me something to laugh at after sitting there for three hours watching 
all this footage." 
     Gibbons, who is assisting editor Ben Burtt, is perhaps the only person on the mammoth production who has seen every second of the film's footage. "I'm the one who constantly looks at it," she said. "Because I'll have watched it all, I'll basically know where everything is on all those tapes. It's a good element to have. Not even George Lucas has seen all of that." 

37.HAYDEN RELATES TO ANAKIN'S TRANSFORMATION 
     STAR WARS: EPISODE II star Hayden Christensen said that he relates to his character's transformation into Darth Vader. "I think his transition to the dark side is very well justified," Christensen said of Anakin Skywalker. "I think when the audience sees what he's going through, it's the type of thing where the audience would have made the same choice that Anakin makes." 
     Christensen added that audiences won't see the complete change in the upcoming prequel. "He's still a good kid in this film," he said. "But there are very specific flashes of the dark side in direct reaction to what's happening to him." 

38.BRUCE WILLIS HAS STOPPED BEING AN ACTION HERO AS OF SEPT. 11 
    Actor Bruce Willis is so shocked by recent attacks on America, he's sworn never to play an action hero again. He's enjoyed the new seriousness he's reached in M. Night Shyamalan's movies THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE. He says, "I'm not an action hero anymore, and I think it would be inappropriate for me to compare anything that happens in Hollywood and the entertainment industry to the tragic loss of life on September 11th. I know people who died in that tragedy. It's impossible to wrap your mind around what happened there. What happens in Hollywood isn't real - it's about diversion. What I'm trying to do is just entertain people. I'm proud to be an entertainer." 

39.DE NIRO'S PATRIOTIC STAND 
    Robert De Niro saw red (white & blue) when a would-be film-maker approached him in the wake of the September attacks on America. De Niro was at his New York restaurant, in Tribeca (not far from ground zero) when a man came in and handed him a script focusing on the World Trade Center tragedy. The man apparently told him, "You'll play Mayor Giuliani - and win an Oscar!" Visibly stunned, De Niro snapped back, "I can't believe you're trying to cash in on this. Up yours, buddy!" De Niro then grabbed the stunned man by the collar and marched him out of his restaurant - to a chorus of cheers from diners. 

40.CHUCK NORRIS IS STUNNED AT HOW CLOSELY THE ATTACKS MIRROR HIS NEW MOVIE 
    Chuck Norris is "dumbfounded" at how closely the terrorist attacks on America mirror his upcoming movie. The eerie scenario of CBS television movie THE PRESIDENT'S MAN: GROUND ZERO, filmed four months before the attack. It has an Islamic extremist threatening to detonate an atomic bomb unless three terrorists who bombed the World Trade Center are released. The show's title even includes the name given to the devastated impact area in Manhattan where the towers crumbled. Norris said, "I am dumbfounded. When I saw the World Trade Center being destroyed on TV, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was horrible, freakish. When we did this movie, it was the furthest thing from our minds that something catastrophic would happen. But today, it certainly seems prophetic." Norris concluded, "This tragedy has pulled our country together. Now, we've got to retaliate. It's time for terrorists to learn that they have awakened a sleeping giant, and they will pay the price." 

41.RICHARD GERE ADVOCATES TREATING THE TERRORISTS WITH LOVE 
    Dalai Lama devotee Richard Gere is preaching that the best way for Americans to deal with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is with "the medicine of love and compassion." The Buddhist actor is a great believer in karma and stresses the importance of pity for everyone - including terrorists. He insists we must also think about "the terrorists who are creating such horrible future lives for themselves because of the negativity of this karma. If you see it from a much wider point of view, we're all in this together. We're all intimately interconnected in all of these actions." He adds, "It's all of our jobs to keep our minds as expansive as possible. If you can see them [the terrorists] as a relative who's dangerously sick and we have to give them medicine, and the medicine is love and compassion. There's nothing better." 

42.JACKIE CHAN WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER ON SEPT. 11 
    Jackie Chan has said that he had been scheduled to shoot scenes for his film NOSEBLEED at the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. Filming was canceled because of a late script. Chan said, "Filming was scheduled to have taken place at 7:00 a.m. on that Tuesday morning, and as I had to be at the top of one of the towers for one of the scenes, I would probably have died if the shooting had gone ahead as planned." He added: "Well, I guess my time is not up yet." 
    The film concerns a WTC window washer (played by Chan) who overhears a terrorist plot to blow up the Statue of Liberty. At this point it doesn't look like the movie will be made. 

43.DON'T LOOK FOR A STREAM OF PATRIOTIC HOLLYWOOD EXTRAVAGANZAS 
    There have been several attempts to compare our current conflict to World War II, mostly because both started in response to a surprise attack. There are many differences between the two - one of them is the movies that we have available. Hollywood has no plans in the works to make any film about the current international crisis that might inspire audiences "to rally for our troops" according to Chris McGurk, MGM vice chairman and COO. He said the problem is how movies are made today. "Back then, the studios could throw something together in six months or less. Now, you're talking about 18 months or two years from the script stage to releasing it. The investment levels are higher, the stakes are higher and there's more quality control." 
    Director Oliver Stone has blamed "the Wall Street crowd," saying that they "bought into the movie business big-time, and they pumped it up and forced these companies to get bigger and bigger. . . . People don't matter. It's just a corporation. That's what's scary. There's nobody at the controls. There's nobody to talk to. There's nothing personal about it."

44.MORE PRODUCTION PANICS SINCE SEPTEMBER 11 
    Studios are still scrambling to juggle production content in the wake of the terrorist attacks in September. They're editing, shifting release schedules, scrapping productions and re-ordering priorities like crazy, trying to stay ahead of a wave of reaction from theater-goers. 
    Sony's TICK TOCK, in which Jennifer Lopez plays an F.B.I. Agent racing to defuse bombs in Los Angeles has been delayed from a December to a June release. There's a possibility of shelving its release altogether. 
    Warner's is scratching its head over DESIGNATED SURVIVOR. The plot is about the destruction of the U.S. Capitol while the President, Vice-President and both Houses of Congress are present for a State of the Union address (the new President is the Secretary of Agriculture). There's talk that they're going ahead with the production - very, very quietly. 
    Fox's TRUCK 44 has caused the studio concern. It shows firefighters in peril. 
    Steven Soderbergh changed scenes in his upcoming OCEAN'S ELEVEN remake. There was a sequence involving an explosion in the New York, New York hotel and casino in Las Vegas which features a replica of the World Trade Center. Soderbergh moved the fictional disaster to another casino. 
    Martin Scorsese has delayed the intended fall release of GANGS OF NEW YORK until next year. The film is about the draft riots in New York during the Civil War. It's thought that audiences may not want to see scenes of violence on New York streets. 
    Some theater chains have scrapped plans to show  the Christian-themed MEGIDDO: THE OMEGA CODE 2. There's concern that scenes of the apocalypse and the explosion of the Coliseum in Rome may be too intense for some viewers. 
    Disney is in the process of revising the ending of its upcoming animated fantasy film LILO & STITCH in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. The film's climax originally featured the cute alien Stitch sneaking onto a commercial 747 jet, commandeering it and taking it for a joy ride between the skyscrapers in downtown Honolulu. The movie's slated for a 2002 release 
    The Walt Disney Co. also confirmed that it has postponed its scheduled December release of BAD COMPANY, a comedy thriller starring Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock, because the film's plot revolves around the CIA and terrorists operating in New York City. In the original script of the Jerry Bruckheimer film, a terrorist boasts that he will touch off a nuclear device that will "turn Wall Street into a piece of charcoal." 
    Disney President and COO Robert Iger has indicated that both the company's film and TV units will likely avoid dramas about terrorist plots. "Terrorism is going to be taboo for a while," he said. He did not indicate when it might be able to resume business as usual. "It would be wise of us to take the temperature of the country and then follow that." For the time being, he said, film and TV producers will often have to make decisions about content by examining their "gut feelings." As of today, however, Iger indicated that he doesn't know what direction programming will take. "Will people want a lot more comedy based material, more family oriented and heart warming, or police action dramas? It's way too early to tell." 

45.HOLLYWOOD SOUNDS A LONG, COLLECTIVE, "DUUUUUHHHHH" 
    As so often seems to be the case nowadays, the suits in Hollywood seem to be clueless on which way to turn. They stockpiled a backlog of hastily slapped together films last spring, fearing a double strike from writers and actors. They've got us living us a steady diet of sequels, prequels and formulaic requels. Since then they've been running scared with an economic downturn here. They were just about to gear up production again when the horrible events of September 11 marked us all forever. The result has been a near freezing of production. 
    Last year, in the fourth quarter, Warner Bros. had fifteen movies in production. This year that number's dropped to three. Sony went from nine to zero. Paramount and Disney dropped from nine and seven, respectively, to two each. 
    If you consider the movies on our Desert Island lists, relatively few of them had many (or any) scenes of explosions and destruction. Hollywood has traded in innovative thinking, well-written stories and subtle performances for pyrotechnics and second-unit work. Perhaps, one small hopeful note in the present national gloom in which our nation is mired, would be if the 
people making movies now could shake the industry-wide amnesia that has descended upon it for too long. Maybe they can begin to remember what they once did right and do it again. 
    Why did a low-budget film like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT do so well? Certainly not because of great makeup and effects work! Perhaps because it told the story of a personal horror that afflicted a few people. Most of the best movies from the past have homed in on a few lives. CASABLANCA used World War II for a backdrop to tell us about Rick, Ilsa and Victor. DRACULA didn't terrorize all of London, but the small band of people that he approached as prey were far more effective in telling the story. 
    I, for one, have seen far too much carnage on CNN to want to see more of it on a theater screen. I hope that Hollywood gets a clue and finds its way out of its present doldrums. 

46.IMAGINATIVE CINEMA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 
    OCTOBER 5:JOY RIDE is about a good trip gone bad. A college student (Paul Walker) drives to New Jersey from Colorado with his older, prank-playing brother (Steve Zahn) to pick up the girl he has a thing for (Leelee Sobieski) from her college. On the way, a prank played on a trucker the two brothers meet during a CB radio conversation turns dark when they discover he's a psycho killer and he's out to get them. The movie was directed by John Dahl (THE LAST SEDUCTION, RED ROCK WEST). The screenwriters are the film's producer, J.J. Abrams (FOREVER YOUNG, REGARDING HENRY) and Clay Tarver, making his screenwriting debut. 
    TRAINING DAY tracks the events of the first day on the job of a rookie cop (Ethan Hawke) working in the Los Angeles Police Department's undercover narcotics unit. His partner is Alonzo, a corrupt veteran cop (Denzel Washington). The movie was directed by Antoine Fuqua (BAIT, THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS). The screenwriter is the film's co-producer, David Ayer (co-writer of U-571). 

    OCTOBER 12: IRON MONKEY, the 1993 Chinese film, will finally be seen by American movie-goers. The film has been available on video for many years. Set in a 19th century China village, when a corrupt politician finds himself repeatedly robbed by a masked bandit, Iron Monkey, named after a local deity, he forces a traveling physician into investigating the mystery and stopping him by holding his young son in jail. It's loosely based upon the British legend of Robin Hood. It also features the same historical Chinese figure, Wong Fei-Hung (1847-1924), whose life has been the basis for nearly 100 films in China, including THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER and ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA. The martial arts demonstrated are heart-poundingly awesome! The fight choreographer is Yuen Woo-Ping, the finest kung-fu choreographer in the business. You may have seen his work in THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. 

    OCTOBER 19: FROM HELL tracks the most notorious serial killer of all time. Scotland Yard investigator Frederick Abberline (Johnny Depp) investigates the mysterious deaths of prostitutes in the Whitechapel district of London during the Victorian Era of England; a London and time of rampant poverty, disease, crime, and grimy people living grimy lives. As the 
murders continue, Abberline's search brings him closer to what may (or may not) be the truth . . . and it has something to do with the Royal Family. The cast also contains Ian Holm, Robbie Coltrane, Heather Graham and Sir Ian Richardson. The directors are Albert & Allen Hughes (MENACE II SOCIETY, DEAD PRESIDENTS). The screenwriters are Terry Hayes (MAD MAX 2: ROAD WARRIOR, cowriter of VERTICAL LIMIT) and Rafael Yglesias (FEARLESS, LES MISERABLES). It's based on a graphic novel written by Alan Moore. 
    THE LAST CASTLE is a different kind of prison movie. This one is set in a military prison. A three-star general (Robert Redford) is wrongly court-martialed and sentenced to a military maximum security prison. He rallies the 1,200 inmates to revolt against the corrupt warden (James Gandolfini, AKA "Tony Soprano") and his guards. Robin Wright Penn plays Redford's daughter. The director is Rod Lurie (THE CONTENDER). The screenplay was written by first-timer David Scarpa, with a re-write by Graham Yost (BROKEN ARROW, SPEED, HARD RAIN). 

    OCTOBER 24: BONES is about Jimmy Bones (Snoop Doggy Dogg), a legendary protector and patron of his thriving neighborhood. Over 20 years after his death by gunshot in 1979, Jimmy Bones comes back as a ghost. He discovers that crime and drugs have crumbled the neighborhood. He's going to wreak revenge on those who killed him and to clean up the mess that they've made of the streets. Pam Grier plays Bones' girlfriend who is now a clairvoyant. The director is Ernest Dickerson (DEMON KNIGHT, BULLETPROOF). The screenplay was written by Adam Simon (CARNOSAUR, BRAIN DEAD) and Tim Metcalfe (cowriter of KALIFORNIA, FRIGHT NIGHT PART II). 

    OCTOBER 26: K-PAX looks like a "very-special-person-changing-people's-lives" movie, in the tradition of PHENOMENON, MICHAEL and STARMAN. Prot (Kevin Spacey) is a mysterious new patient at a mental hospital who claims to come from a distant planet called K-Pax. As his psychiatrist, Dr. Gene Brewer (Jeff Bridges), tries to figure out exactly how to help him, the doctor gradually begi
