| 1.SPECIAL FEATURES OF OUR HALLOWEEN ISSUE
October is OUR month. Video, TV, movies - everything is loaded with stuff we love. In Pentagon parlance, October is a "target rich environment." You'll notice a story below in the TV section about the many special programs that will be running through the month. The list is not exhaustive, but it provides enough coverage to at least get you going. The real treasure trove is located at the end, in our calendar section. All the imaginative cinema specials and movies airing on AMC and Turner Classic Movies are listed, complete with show times. Those of you reading this via a computer (that can support HTML) can click on the links provided for each film. It will take you to the Internet Movie Data Base (the IMDB). The IMDB is the finest repository of information about movies on the planet. It warehouses data on over 200,000 movies and over 400,000 actors. You'll be able to find out in-depth information on each title and performer and even link to a place to buy the corresponding video or DVD. |
| 2. SEPTEMBER
ROCKED!
September was an amazing meeting! We had a lively panel discussion thanks to John Ward about comic books turned into movies. Vince DiLeonardi brought the films. We watched CURSE OF THE DEMON. We had numerous guests visiting and many of them became members (see below). We also enjoyed a much anticipated reunion. Sue Feder attended one meeting, in August of last year, where she joined up. Just after that she had a recurrence of a very stubborn lymphoma. Sue has fought her battles and has made it through to the other side (with a fresh crop of newly re-grown curly hair). Sue, it was wonderful to see you again. Welcome home. |
| 3. NEWS OF OUR NEXT MEETING
Our October meeting will be held on Saturday October 28th. It's not certain yet if we'll be starting at 6:00 P.M. or somewhat earlier. We'll let you know before the next meeting. As usual, we'll meet at the church hall behind the Perry Hall Presbyterian Church located at 8848 BelAir Road. Take Baltimore Beltway exit 32 north on Belair Road. Turn left onto Joppa Road. Immediately past the miniature golf course turn left into the parking lot. If you miss it there are ample turn-around opportunities. If you get stuck call 410-598-8005. That's Dave Henderson's cell phone. He'll talk you in. We may be doing some sort of Halloween party. You're welcomed to come in costume if you wish. If you're available to assist with either food or decoration preparation, let us know eith er by e-mail or call 410-788-4086. |
| 4. NOVEMBER DEALER'S ROOM
The movie show that was to take place in November at White Marsh has been postponed until the spring. Gary and Sue Svehla have decided to host a mini dealer's room at the Hunt Valley Inn on Saturday, November 25. The hours will be from 10 to 4. This will be similar to the one that they did last June in Timonium. They're selling tables at $30 each, if anyone would like a table of their own. Click on their names to send them an email. We'll need two things. First we'll need people to staff the table. Secondly, and most importantly, we'll need items to sell. Whatever books, DVD's, videos, magazines, posters, toys and other collectibles that you think would be of interest to collectors (and that you would like to contribute for the well-being of the club) please bring along with you to the October 28th or November 18th meetings. Thanks to Peggy Gervasio and Gary Roberson for already contributing items at our September meeting. |
| 5. OCTOBER'S MOVIE SELECTION
Our presenter of films in October will be Regina Vallerani. She may have some additional titles to toss into the mix but here's the list as it stands so far. (1) THE STORY OF RICKY (2) DAY OF THE BEAST (3) HENRY, PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (4) DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING (5) THEY CAME FROM WITHIN (6) UNSANE There was some sentiment last time to view two films. As a result, we're waiving a panel for that night. Bring a seat cushion or a comfortable chair. Those steel folding chairs get a little tough on the anatomy after a while. |
| 6. WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MEMBERS
First of all, welcome to someone who joined us
a while ago and didn't receive any formal acknowledgment. Belated greeting
are extended to Kelly Linenberger. You may
have the beautiful young lady on the arm of Mitch
Klein or remember her voicing some interesting ideas at our meetings.
We offer a formal, and tardy, welcome.
|
| 7. FAREWELL
TO OUR GUESTS
Over the past several months various people have been receiving "The ICS Files" as a courtesy, with hopes that they would get to come to a meeting and check us out. With this issue, those complementary issues come to an end. The dates for the next three meetings are October 28th, November 18th and December 30th. We hope to see you at one of these or, perhaps, sometime next year. Barring special events or holiday weekends we generally meet on the last Saturday the month. Please stop by. We'll be there. |
| 8. 2001 CALENDARS
We'll be doing a 2001 calendar. We will still need to work out details on it, like when it will be available and price. This edition will have all of next year's I.C.S. meetings on it, regional conventions and film festivals and some other fun facts. If you're interested and haven't previously signed up for one, let me know. You can reach me by e-mail or call 410-788-4086. |
| 9. WE EXTEND OUR CONDOLENCES
Around the time of our August meeting, one of own was experiencing a traumatic event. The mother of club member Courtney Spies passed away. Courtney, speaking from personal experience, I know how difficult it is to loose a member of your immediate family, especially a parent. We extend our sincere condolences to you and to all the members of the Spies family. |
| 10.INSIDE THE I.C.S.: "THE ICS FILES" I
This is first of an occasional series giving some explanation and insights into the club. BYLINE: You may have noticed that with this issue, #21, of "The I.C.S. Files," that there's a byline up top, a little below the title. That's been added for two reasons. First, more and more people who have little or no direct exposure to the club are reading "The ICS Files" (thanks in large part to the fine work of webmaster Charlie Wittig). There are many first person pronouns sprinkled around each issue. These folks might like to know who the deuce this "I," "me," "my" character is. Now you know. Secondly, if for some reason I'm no longer writing "The ICS Files," it will be valuable, for archival purposes, to determine when I stopped and my successor took over. "THE GLASS TEAT": That's the name, that occurs just below, of assorted television miscellany that might be interesting to glimpse but aren't quite developed enough for a full story. Someone asked me recently why I'm using a name developed by writer Harlan Ellison. Harlan Ellison is a personal deity of mine. I don't think that everything that he's ever written is golden. But bad Harlan Ellison is often a lot better than good most-everybody-else. Mr. Ellison used to write a regular column of commentary on TV, society and what ever the hell else he wanted to write about under the title of "The Glass Teat." A "teat" is the hangy down thingy that female mammals use to nourish their young'uns. Nursing from a glass one would be as satisfying as Mr. Ellison found television as our spirits attempt to suckle the heartless glass screen that dominates too much of our time. The use of the name here in this humble rag is meant to be an homage to the master. Thank-you Mr. Ellison. |
| 11. Look for more LEXX. The Sci-Fi Channel has announced a commitment for 21 more episodes of LEXX for 2001. In the new season, the series' dysfunctional crew will find itself on a world that may provide it with its most challenging adventures yet. Production on the new episodes is slated to begin in Germany and Nova Scotia later this year. . . . Nobody does it better. The classic John Cleese comedy series FAWLTY TOWERS has been voted the best British television show in history. The series topped a list of 100 best TV programs determined by a poll of 1,600 influential members of the industry conducted by the British Film Institute. . . . New PRETENDER adventures coming from TNT. THE PRETENDER, part of the abruptly canceled NBC Saturday night "Thrillogy," will air a pair of new made-for-TV two hour films next year. Re-runs of the series can be seen daily at 7:00 P.M. on TNT. . . . XLV BLUE? Here's an interesting chew toy for your mind - a new cop drama. This one wouldn't be like any other before it. This one will be set in 65 A.D., during Nero's reign. Dreamworks and NYPD BLUE's David Milch are developing. Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) will be directing the two-hour pilot-movie. . . . A kinder, gentler Beltran. Robert Beltran, the actor who plays First Officer Chakotay on STAR TREK VOYAGER , has been cited on these pages before for his apparent disdain for all things VOYAGER. On the official STAR TREK Website he became a sentimental ol' sonuvagun when he contemplated the show's coming to a close. He said things like "I am going to be sad to miss the people that I work with. But I'm looking forward to moving on to different projects and material." This is the same guy who referred to the show's writers as "brain damaged" and hoped his character would be killed off mid-season (seeICSfiles #19). I think someone must have had a working phaser resting on his temple when he decided to undergo his recent attitude adjustment. . . . TRIPPING THE RIFT, the series? At our August meeting, we viewed a racy little computer-animated short called TRIPPING THE RIFT. It used STAR WARS and STAR TREK allusions along with off-color humor to tell the story of an alien captain in space and his encounter with an all-powerful vengeful killer clown. There's now talk of using the short to launch a regular TV-series. There's already a sequel nearly finished. I'm waiting for the fan conventions to start. . . . Who is THE MOLE? Another new reality series is coming from ABC. This one is THE MOLE. Anderson Cooper has been named host of ABC's new reality series THE MOLE. Cooper will leave his jobs at the network's WORLD NEWS NOW and WORLD NEWS THIS MORNING for the primetime gig set up at Stone Stanley Entertainment. . . . Even more reality! CBS has made a 13-episode commitment to the reality series RACE AROUND THE WORLD. The show, from producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Bertram Van Munster, will pit eight pairs of people against each other in a race across 11 cities where they must complete tasks in 30 days. . . . MUTANT X Live. MARVEL Comics and Artisan Entertainment are working with Tribune Entertainment to launch a live-action syndicated series based on the MUTANT X comic series. In the book, mutant Alex Summers (Havok) finds himself blasted onto a strange alternate Earth where he leads a team of mutants known as The Six. . . . CLEOPATRA 2525 and JACK are the season's first casualty. Production has halted on CLEOPATRA 2525, the show that comprises half of the BACK2BACK ACTION HOUR. The official reason given was that the producers wanted to consider different forms the show may take in the future. New episodes will still air this season. There've been enough shot to last through December. JACK OF ALL TRADES star Bruce Campbell confirmed that his show, the other half of the BACK2BACK ACTION HOUR has been canceled due to low ratings. Fans of the syndicated series have posted a petition to save the two shows. About 205 fans have signed the petition so far to let the producers at Studio USA and Renaissance Pictures know that at least someone was watching the shows. . . . Mulder sightings. In the coming season of THE X-FILES David Duchovny will appear in the first episode of the season, the final six and three in between. Most likely the "Mulder" shows will be big ratings-grabbers. . . . This is not your father's STAR TREK. Robert Hewitt Wolfe, co-executive producer of the upcoming syndicated television series GENE RODDENBERRY'S ANDROMEDA, said that the show won't be your father's STAR TREK series. "The characters are very, very different," Wolfe said in an interview. "The situation is very, very different. It's not about preserving an existing civilization, or even about going places where no one has ever been before. . . . It's about trying to unite a fragmented world, and trying very much to build something or rebuild something." The show will debut the week of October 2nd. . . . Will he get super acne? The WB has made a 13-episode commitment to a new, live-action SUPERMAN series. The show will revolve around a 15-year-old Clark Kent just learning to use his powers, and will reportedly also include the characters of Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Ma & Pa Kent. "It'll be a cross between the way it is portrayed in the (1970s) movies and TWIN PEAKS," WB Network Entertainment President Susanne Daniels said. "There's deadly crime going on in Smallville, and that's how Clark will get his first taste of crime-fighting." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 12. HALLOWEEN TREATS ON TELEVISION
THE 13 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN, on the Fox Family Channel, has five of its days committed to THE SCARIEST PLACES ON EARTH, a series of reality-based specials. They'll film a real family inside a "haunted house" for 48 hours. The last hour of the five-night special will be shot live from a haunted house in Atchinson, Kan., where a family fled in terror five years ago after the father said he was continuously tortured by the ghost of a small girl. The man will return to the house to see if the ghost shows up again. THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE will premiere on the IFC (Independent Film Channel) on Friday the 13th (of October) at 10 p.m. The original documentary, directed by Adam Simon, will look at horror movies from the 1970s and the work of directors Wes Craven, George Romero, Tobe Hooper, Tom Savini and David Cronenberg. The IFC will also air Hooper's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE; Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD, MARTIN and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD; Cronenberg's THE BROOD and RABID; Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT; and Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR. DARK PRINCE: THE TRUE STORY OF DRACULA will air on USA on Oct. 31. There must be something about Rudolf Martin. Josh Whedon cast him as Dracula in BUFFY's season premiere and here he is again, this time playing the real Dracula. Set to air on Halloween night, Dark Prince is the tale of the eccentric 15th-century Romanian ruler known as Vlad the Impaler. ROCKY HORROR 25th ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND airs on VH1 from Oct. 28 to the 31st. Let's all do the "Time Warp" again, as VH1 celebrates the 25th anniversary of this camp classic. The show includes a cast reunion. SHADOW OF THE BLAIR WITCH airs on the Sci-Fi Channel on Sunday, Oct. 22nd. This one-hour movie special will offer a taste of the new film BLAIR WITCH 2: BOOK OF SHADOWS, which opens Oct. 27th (see below). The special will feature a unique film preview experience with original characters and a plotline that parallels the film. Sci-Fi did much the same thing with its CURSE OF THE BLAIR WITCH, which aired at the same time as THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was in theaters. SHADOW OF THE BLAIR WITCH will follow the murder trial of Jeff Patterson, a Burkittsville resident with a questionable history that includes child abduction, cultist beliefs and a violent imagination. The special was written by Ben Rock, who wrote CURSE and was a production designer on the original PROJECT. THE GREENWICH VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE gets live coverage on the Sci-Fi Channel. You get to gawk at the world's most lavish and bizarre Halloween event in the privacy of your own home. POSSESSED debuts on Showtime, Sunday, Oct. 22nd. This original movie from Showtime is based on a real life account of a Catholic Church-sanctioned exorcism that was performed in 1949. The tale was later fictionalized and turned into 1973's THE EXORCIST. In POSSESSED, after the death of his aunt, strange and frightening things begin to happen around a boy named Robbie Mannheim. When science and medicine can't explain or stop what's happening to Robbie, his parents finally turn to the Church. Father William Bowdern, who suffers devastating memories of his time as a chaplain during World War II, reluctantly takes on the case. In order to save Robbie, Father Bowdern must face the demonic forces that have a hold on the young boy, as well as go up against a powerful Archbishop. Starring Timothy Dalton, Henry Czerny, Christopher Plummer and Piper Laurie. THE SIGHT airs on F/X on Oct. 29th. Written and directed by Paul Anderson (MORTAL KOMBAT), this haunted hotel story deals with a successful architect (Andrew McCarthy) who runs up against 21 restless spirits and a serial murder that was never solved. |

| 13. SYNDICATED AIRTIMES
Following are airtimes and affiliated stations for both new and existing syndicated shows. These times are as close as I could calculate. Sometimes a variety of times were listed and I was forced to pick one. Check your local listings for the final word. This should cover almost everyone in the club (and of course, if you have satellite or live in a very remote area, all bets are off). Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything about the new Lorenzo Lamas show, THE IMMORTAL. As far as I can tell, publicity for the show seems to be handled by the Witness Protection Program.

| 14. RIVERWORLD COMING TO A SCREEN NEAR YOU
Alex Proyas, director of the films THE CROW and DARK CITY, will executive produce an upcoming television series based on Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series of sci-fi novels. Proyas will also direct some of the episodes of the one-hour series, including the pilot. Alliance Atlantis Entertainment will develop the series in a deal with Farmer. The series will be filmed in Proyas' native Australia. The Hugo Award-winning Riverworld series is set on a planet where a godlike race has resurrected the whole of humanity along the banks of a multi-million-mile river. The novels have been translated into 21 languages in more than 40 countries. Proyas said that the project was presented to him as a feature film. "But I really thought that the episodic nature of the books was more suited to television, and television is a medium I have long wanted to explore," he said. Eements of all the books in the series will be blended into the television episodes. The central element of the series will be the adventures that the team encounters while on "an epic voyage up the river," Proyas said. "This will be the core of our series." |

| 15. ONE SMALL STEP FOR PROGRAMMING
NBC has acquired DESTINATION MIR, a new reality series from executive producer Mark Burnett (SURVIVOR) which will send one contestant into space. In MIR, around 12 Americans will be sent to the Star City Russian training center, where their instructors will eliminate one each week, until one lone survivor is left to blast off to the Russian space station. A visit to the NBC website will enable you to qualify as a possible contestant to appear on the show. Is there anything those cash-hungry Russkies won't do? Not to be outdone by the enemy, the three other major networks, CBS, ABC and Fox, attended a "pitch meeting" about a show in which 20 contestants would be trained at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, with one of them being selected to spend a week aboard the new International Space Station. The proposal was put forward by Dreamtime Holdings, which was described as "a company with ties to NASA," and the Endeavor talent agency. Fox Entertainment chairman Sandy Grushow said: "We were told NASA was involved. If they're producing this thing through NASA, that's the powerful attraction." Looks like Sandy's hopes were dashed. NASA has denied involvement with the project. |

| 16. THE SCI-FI CHANNEL IS CONTROLLING TRANSMISSION
The Sci-Fi Channel has struck a deal with MGM Television Entertainment to continue original production of THE OUTER LIMITS television series for a seventh season. The series had been canceled by Showtime at the end of last season. Sci-Fi has ordered 22 new episodes. Production will resume soon, and the series will begin airing new episodes on Sci-Fi in early 2001. After new episodes premiere, the series will be syndicated beginning in September 2001. As part of the deal, the Sci-Fi channel has also acquired the 49 original Outer Limits episodes. They'll also create at least three self-contained episodes that act as back-door pilots for potential series. Executive producer Pen Densham said that THE OUTER LIMITS had always hoped to be a springboard for new shows. "When we originally created the series, one of our hopes was that, because we were making shows that were anthologies, that within that process there would naturally turn out to be shows that would extrapolate into potential series, but it was never addressed," Densham said. "Now we're formally addressing it." |

| 17. STRACZYNSKI'S BALLOON JUICE
BABYLON 5 and CRUSADE creator J. Michael Straczynski told fans that he holds out hope that his television series might find new life on the airwaves. Speaking to fans recently during an Online chat Straczynski said, "At this point, the B5 story is concluded. Whether or not there are any future journeys into that universe will only be determined by time, fate, chance and the occasional Neilsen rating." But, he added, he will be watching how BABYLON 5 reruns perform as they air in widescreen format on The Sci-Fi Channel weeknights at 7 p.m. "As far as I know, [Sci-Fi] will be looking at the ratings of B5 to determine its next steps. If the B5 ratings do well, then they may very well pick up the CRUSADE reruns after the first of the year. After that . . . if those do well, they may commission something CRUSADE-ish to follow. Or they may commission a B5 something-or-other in advance of that (i.e., maybe a TV movie or something). But all of this is totally speculative, full of balloon juice, and should not be trusted, especially given the source (me)." As for a possible BABYLON 5 movie, Straczynski said, "Everything comes around in time. Everything. If there could be a GILLIGAN'S ISLAND movie, then sure as heck sooner or later there will be a B5 feature. . . . There have been some informal chats with [Warner Brothers] about this, but nothing portentous. I do think it will happen in time, but again, and to be utterly honest. . . . I'm in no rush. I told the five-year story I wanted to tell, and I'd rather it be done right than fast. Though the idea of Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Ivanova does seem rather appealing at times." |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 18. EITHER JERRY DOYLE IS SAVING B5 OR HEADED FOR
FRANCE
Jerry Doyle, who played Security Chief Michael Garibaldi on BABYLON 5, told fans that he's been working hard to put the series back on the air. Doyle said, "I've talked with [B5 creator J. Michael Straczynski] at length, [producers] John Copleland, Doug Netter, [director] John Flinn, [and actors] Bruce [Boxleitner], Andreas [Katsulas], [Richard] Biggs, Peter [Jurasik], [Patricia] Tallman, [Tracy] Scoggins at length for many months about putting a B5 type project on the air. We all agree it was and is a great show." He added, "I've also been in touch with [Warner Brothers] and the Sci-Fi Channel and other related parties along the same lines." Straczynski, however, seem dubious about the outcome of Doyle's efforts to resurrect the series. Straczynski said, "I don't know. Jerry's a nice guy, an honorable guy, but I think at times he hears voices telling him to go save France. I keep telling him, 'Don't do it. I've seen that movie, you wouldn't like the ending.' A lot of folks have tried to get BABYLON 5 back one way or another - a half-dozen attempts so far - and none of them has been more than just talk. It all, at the end of the day, ends up in the same trajectory." Doyle responded, "I don't understand Joe's quote about my hearing voices telling me to go save France. I just don't understand his comment. There obviously seems to be interest on all fronts to put it back on the air, and I will personally continue to do what I can to put the show back on the air, on The Sci-Fi Channel where it belongs." |

| 26. STEPHEN KING'S LATEST RACES TO THE SCREEN BEFORE
IT'S PUBLISHED
Stephen King has sold the screen rights to his next novel, The Dreamcatcher, to Castle Rock Entertainment for a film that will be adapted by veteran writer William Goldman (BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, MARATHON MAN, PRINCESS BRIDE, JURASSIC PARK 3). Goldman also adapted King's Misery and Hearts in Atlantis for the screen. The Dreamcatcher, which Scribner will publish next summer, tells the story of four boyhood friends who perform a heroic act and are given a strange gift as a reward. Years later, they reunite to use that power to defeat a mysterious enemy. 27.HUGO WINNERS ANNOUNCED

| 31.GALAXY QUEST BEAT SOME AWESOME COMPETITION FOR
ITS HUGO
Writer Bob Gordon said he was in shock when GALAXY QUEST bested such tremendous competitors as THE MATRIX and THE SIXTH SENSE. He definitely considered GALAXY QUEST to be the underdog. "Before the awards people kept saying 'Well, I voted for you' in a way that sounded like they didn't think we'd win, but wanted us to," he said. "You want everybody to like the movie, obviously, but to get an acknowledgment from this community in particular meant so much to me," Gordon said. "First, these are writers and real fans of writing, so of course it means a great deal to have them acknowledge the work. But also the film was a valentine to Sci-Fi and fandom itself, so it was very gratifying to know that this is how it was perceived by true fans of the genre." Gordon said the honor brought his film full circle. GALAXY QUEST is a movie about science fiction fans, and Gordon said receiving fandom's highest award at one of the largest Sci-Fi conventions in the world was both satisfying and surreal. "Keep in mind, I did research early on at a few conventions, then during production spent a lot of time on the convention set for a GALAXY QUEST TV show that never existed, working on scenes for a GALAXY QUEST movie that hadn't come out yet," he said. "So to finally cap it off accepting an award at the Worldcon convention and have the entire audience shouting [the line from the film] 'Never give up, never surrender' . . . was a little mind-bending." Hollywood in general seems in no rush to embrace the Hugos. Fans, however, could well see Gordon at future ceremonies since he is currently at work on another science fiction project, the sequel to the hit film MEN IN BLACK. And although he has no specific plans to write another GALAXY QUEST movie, he said he had a lot of fun ideas that could not fit into the first film, so it seems there may be some hope for those fans who never give up and never surrender. 32.DiCAPRIO TO PLAY ABBREVIATED BALTIMOREAN

OCTOBER 13TH: LOST SOULS - This film has been held for a year, waiting for release. That's usually not a good sign. A young woman who belongs to a group of exorcists (Winona Ryder) discovers a conspiracy that would lead to the unleashing of Satan on Earth, free to do his nastiness, and at the heart of the problem is a courtroom writer (Ben Chaplin). As a man who prides himself on his foundation of logic and reason, he can't accept her warnings that he's been chosen to be a vessel for Satan and allow the Dark One to reign on Earth. After the box-office meltdown of BLESS THE CHILD, END OF DAYS and STIGMATA New Line may be a little wary about releasing this film at all. OCTOBER 20TH: BEDAZZLED
- This is a re-make of a very funny 1967 film starring Peter Cook and Dudley
Moore. In the current version, a suicidal technical adviser (Brendan Fraser)
sells his soul to the devil (Elizabeth Hurley) so that he may have the
seven wishes that will allow him to win the adoration of the woman he loves
(a coworker in his office). The problem? Each wish goes wildly wrong. None
of them seem to have the effect that he'd intended.
OCTOBER 27TH: BOOK
OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2 - The sequel occurs in present day Burkittsville.
Four young people are going on a Blair Witch tour. They set up camp near
the spooky abandoned house where the last film concluded. They awake with
no memory of having fallen asleep and five hours for which they can't account.
Slowly, legend and reality combine for them as their lives and sanity begin
to fall apart.

| 64.LUCAS SAYS COMPUTERS WILL NOT REPLACE ACTORS,
JAR JAR UNAVAILABLE FOR COMMENT
George Lucas forecast that the advent of digital filming will never result in the replacement of live actors by digital creations. Speaking at a news conference in Caserta, Italy, where he was filming scenes for STAR WARS: EPISODE II in the 18th century Royal Palace, Lucas said, "People forget that acting is an art form. You can't just take the likeness of a human being and make them act, no matter how you do it, it takes actors. It takes actors to do the voice, it takes actors to do the animation, it takes actors to create the characters. I see digital technology as being a boon for actors and giving more work to more actors, rather than replacing actors." Many actors see it as a "boon" in much the same way that the European settlement of North America was a "blessing" for the Native Americans. We'll see. 65.DOES IT GO ZIP WHEN IT MOVES AND POP WHEN IT

| 67.HOLLYWOOD VIDEO PUMPS IT UP!
In the D.C. neighborhood of Tenley Town, Hollywood Video has opened up a store exploding with titles as it's sworn enemy, Blockbuster, contemplates life after the death of video rentals (see "The ICS Files" #20, item 84). Their new store contains 45,000 VHS titles and 5,000 DVD's. According to Hollywood, this is now the largest video store on the planet. It contains about four times the titles that average Hollywood's contain. This is the second such store that they've altered like this (the first was in Salt Lake City, Utah). This location has been there since 1995. Rather than radically expand the space and create a barn-like structure, Hollywood has turned all of the spines of the films out in a library-like fashion. If this test works, they expect to have at least one mega store in every city. Hollywood has also been testing the waters with DVD. They now have a half dozen DVD-only stores across the country, each containing 5-6,000 titles. They've also got about 20 combo-stores featuring large VHS sections and about 3,000 DVD titles. 68.LOOK FOR YOUR BLOCKBUSTER CD-ROM IN THE MAIL

Yet he still had a burning desire to make films. He turned to the skidrow studios and for very low budgets made a string of interesting and innovative movies. THE EDGAR G. ULMER COLLECTION celebrates his achievements. Previously released are Volume 1: THE STRANGE WOMAN (1946) & MOON OVER HARLEM (1939), Volume 2: BLUEBEARD (1944) and Volume 3: THE DAUGHTER OF DR. For $24.95 you can marvel at this saga of a deadly robot (an overweight actor wearing a gorilla suit and a diving helmet with "bunny ear" antennae) and his death ray (a bubble machine). The result wouldn't even live up to Ed Woods' standards. One interesting survivor of this little stinker is the man who wrote the score. Before he got the Oscar for THOUROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE or nominations for titles like THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, TRADING PLACES, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, the distinguished film composer Elmer Bernstein wrote music for the slum productions of Hollywood. He did the music for ROBOT MONSTER the same year he did CAT-WOMEN ON THE MOON. . . . Speaking of the master, we have, direct to DVD, THE WORST OF ED WOOD.
